Kayaking to Makinson Island

Makinson Island is located in Lake Tohopekaliga in Kissimmee, FL. Back in the early 1990s, Makinson Island was home to a zoo with free roaming exotic animals called Cypress Island. Cypress Island ferried tourists to the zoo from a dock on the east side of Lake Toho, and once on the island, featured a safari ride, horseback riding, and hiking trails. I went to Cypress Island a few times as a kid and thought it was one of the coolest places ever. Eventually the zoo closed and the island eventually became a county conservation area , officially having the Cypress Island name removed and becoming Makinson Island. Ever since hearing that the island became a public park, I had wanted to return. I finally made that happen recently, getting to Makinson Island by kayak. Paddleboarding Whiskey Creek

I was in Ft. Lauderdale for work and had lots of off time to explore the area. Anticipating my free time, I borrowed someone's inflatable paddleboard while traveling and took it to Whiskey Creek. This waterway flows through Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park in Dania Beach, FL. Whiskey Creek is a tidal waterway which splits barrier island that the state park is located on in half. I launched the paddleboard at a boat ramp very close to where Whiskey Creek meets the Intercoastal Waterway. Soon after setting out on the trip down Whiskey Creek, I took a detour through some mangrove tunnels before reaching a dead end and returned to the main creek. Whiskey Creek was mostly occupied by kayaks and paddleboards, but there was a couple sections with motorboat traffic. Other than the sections with boats, the area was mostly natural, lined with mangroves and forests on both sides of the river. Kayaking Shingle Creek in Kissimmee, FL

Shingle Creek. They say it is the headwaters of the Everglades. Somewhere in the suburbs of Orlando, Shingle Creek begins in what appears to be nothing more than a drainage canal. The water accumulates, becoming a natural looking river in the Hunter's Creek area. If flows like past all of the tourism of US192 and Kissimmee, eventually reaching Lake Tohopekaliga. Which then leads to the Kissimmee River. The water eventually reaches Lake Okeechobee, then finally ending up in the Everglades.
